Crabbing and Dancing
At the Alexander Valley Community Hall
The Alexander Valley Farm Bureau Annual Crab Feed was held Saturday. It was a sold-out packed house munching on delicious crab and salad. Excellent wines were served from more than half a dozen wineries. Dinner was served up by the Alexander Valley 4-H club. Once everyone was completely stuffed with crab, the tables were pushed aside for some serious dancing to the music of The Country Express Band.
Money raised goes to four - $1000 scholarships to graduates of Healdsburg High School. The Alexander Valley Farm Bureau has raised $72,000 for scholarships since it started in 1972.

Music with Pat Simmons
Festivities to celebrate the oldest historic store in Geyserville will be Saturday, July 16th featuring a B-B-Q and a live band. Come with boots and cowboy hats, which are things the store is noted for. There is also a smattering of wonderful gifts for the whole family along with everything else a hardware store is stocked for.
Harry and his family are fixtures in Geyserville with a lineage going back to 1857. His Great Grandfather had property in Geyserville. He owned the land that is now the Olive Hill Cemetery on Canyon Road off Geyserville Ave. If you love old cemeteries, this is one to visit. It started in 1900 and the names of those inhabiting it are a melting pot. On the interesting markers you will find names as ordinary as Smith to the exotic sounding Kavalarskaya who displays a Russian orthodox marker. You’ll find lots of Italian names of course because of the wineries in this region. I liked the plot with a bed of river stones that covered the place where a woman named Stone was buried. You will even find a host of tiny houses as markers for deceased children. Cemeteries are so filled with history and an aura of mystery.
Harry told me about his grandfather, George Bosworth, who worked in a furniture store, then did gold prospecting with no success, worked on building a railroad, was ranch hand in a number of places before finally resettling in Geyserville. Here he married and founded the Cemetery. His Dad and Grandfather opened Bosworth and Son, a feed and dry goods store. They lived down the street in the house now known as the Hope Bosworth House, a fancy bed and breakfast. Harry grew up in Geyserville and after being in the service, where he was a radar repair man for guided missiles, came back to town and opened a shop selling TV’s and hardware and did
plumbing and electricity for the residents of the town. His dad Obid had the store right across from him when I came to town in 1978, r ight next to Joe the blacksmith. Things have changed a great deal in Geyserville since then, but the Bosworth Hardware store just keeps on going. Harry has the diversity gene of his Grandfather and not only runs the store and the cemetery which he inherited, he is also the water commissioner, taking over that position when the previous commissioner knew he would soon die from brain cancer. Someone had to take over and Harry stepped up to the plate. He claims Geyserville water is the best in Sonoma County and that all the folks in town enjoy a long and healthy life because of it. He and his wife are very active in the chamber of commerce and have raised two lovely daughters. Now, he too is a Grandfather, and may Bosworth & Son Hardware Store forever remain in Geyserville!

SUNDAY MAY 1, 2011, 12-4PM
Hoffman Picnic Grounds (formerly Geyser Peak Picnic Grounds)
LEGEND has it, the first May Day Festival was back in 1925. It began as a day to come together as a community and celebrate the wonders of spring. Teachers and Students from all the surrounding schoolhouses were represented. Children would dress up as fairy tale characters and go on pony rides and cake walks. The Firefighters would have water fights and raise money for new equipment. Sometimes you might find a Quilt Raffle or Grape Box Derby Cars racing down the hill form Hoffman Grove. Local children danced the Traditional May Pole Dance and all anticipated the crowning of the May Day Queen!
TODAY, founding settlers of Geyserville still come together and celebrate what has become a town tradition. The crowning of the May Day Queen and her court will be at 1:30. The original may Pole from 1925 will be danced around by local 3rd Grade classes at 2:00. Enjoy the music of Hillary Marckx throughout the day. Kids can play in a Jump Room, climb the Rock Wall and have fun with face painting! The Middle School Ballet Folklorico will perform. There will be a wonderful Geyserville History Display and an egg-toss competition. Geyser Peak Wines and Beer will be served to accompany all the tasty eats, like steak sandwiches and more!

Robert Young Memorial slide show #1 Robert Young Memorial - slide show #2
Robert Young greatly influenced the California wine community since the early 1960s. He pioneered the premium grape industry in California and was first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in the Alexander Valley. Robert was instrumental in changing the way growers and vintners work together, initiating higher standards that inspired his peers nationally and internationally.
Robert Young began conversion of his prune orchards to vineyards when then Sonoma County Farm Advisor Robert Sisson encouraged him to lead the newest trend in California agriculture: premium varietal wine grapes. In 1963, Young planted 6,500 vines on 14 acres in the Alexander Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon was the up-and-coming variety, according to the University of California at Davis. It was a practical variety as well, since this late harvesting grape could be picked after the same crew brought in the prune harvest. Robert Young always understood the importance of research and experimentation. At a time when traditional California vines were head-pruned, he suspected that trellising vines would produce higher quality fruit.
He planted his first Chardonnay vines in 1967. The widely publicized success of this vineyard, and the family's desire to continually upgrade, prompted the Youngs to select and propagate a singular clone, known today as the Robert Young Clone.
"We are blessed to live on and farm land that is very, very special," he said. "I hope that what we have now will never be abused; that future generations will treat the land well and understand that, by being generous, the land will continue to grow whatever we wish for it to grow."
