Tang began his career as a photographer at the Novato Advance in 1974 and worked with them until 1980. In 1980 he opened his photography studio, Rick Tang Photography in Novato, which he had until 2000. Since closing his studio he has done freelance photography. He is a generalist with many specialties that include portraiture, landscapes, architectural, aerial, product, events and a few weddings.

Much of his photographic art comes from vineyards or vineyard ponds. He enjoys finding the abstract image in real life. Some of his photographs have been accused of being paintings, but in fact, they are often untouched photographs.

Tang has been a Rotarian for over 30 years in Novato and Healdsburg. He currently lives in Healdsburg, CA with his partner Vickie Norris.
